Board of Deacons

The Deacons share Christ’s love with Second’s members and friends through prayer, caring notes, visits and meal support. If you or anyone you know would like pastoral care, please contact:

Mission Statement
Deacons are called to be instruments of God’s grace and healing, ministering to the needs of our congregation; as Christ cares for us, we care for one another.

Each Deacon cares for a group of people, mostly members, at Second. We call this group a “flock.”

Here are some of the ways our Deacons care for our congregation:

Caring Cards
Deacons extend Christ’s love to people and let them know that Second is thinking of them. Cards are sent to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries; to offer words of comfort after the death of a loved one; to let people know the church is thinking of them on special occasions; to celebrate Christian holidays; and to reach out to those who have experienced loss during the past year.

Meal Support
Deacons provide short-term meal support to church members during times of illness, following a hospital stay, during rehabilitation at home, new births, or other times of transition.

Soup and Bread Ministry
Deacons take the items to homebound members, to families with new babies, to folks recuperating from an illness or surgery.

Faith and Grief Luncheons
Second invites all who stand in raw grief or are in the process of mourning to attend the Faith & Grief Gatherings. This program is open to the community and there is no cost to attend. The luncheons last one hour and include an opening prayer, welcome, and a short reflection by someone who is grieving. After this, there is facilitated small group conversation where people can process their experience with others who are also grieving. The table discussions are led by trained facilitators and pastors.

The Faith & Grief Gatherings occur on the first Tuesday of every month, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., at Village Presbyterian Church (6641 Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS 66208).

To RSVP, call 469.251.9612 or visit www.faithandgrief.org. This program is co-sponsored by Second Presbyterian, Village Presbyterian, St. Andrew’s Episcopal, St. John’s UMC, and Country Club Christian Church.

Flower Delivery
Deacons share chancel flowers with members who cannot attend services regularly and to friends who could use a visit and a small floral arrangement to brighten their day.

Prayer List
Deacons pray for Second’s members and their friends and family. Prayer requests can be sent to the church office by phone or email, the Second Pres app, or prayer request cards in the sanctuary.

Baptisms
Deacons reach out to those who have just entered the fellowship of the congregation through baptism.

Welcoming Babies & Children
Deacons extend welcome and care for families as they welcome new children into their family.

New Members
Deacons welcome and care for new members and friends.

Visitation
Deacons build relationships with those in our congregation and care for our church family, especially those who are homebound, in a retirement community or senior care facility, as well as those in need of extra support while going through difficult life-changing situations.

End of Life Series
Approximately every two years, Second offers classes to help you and your family with conversations about end of life issues. Navigating through the various aspects surrounding death can be difficult, and sometimes intimidating. Our next End of Life series is tentatively scheduled for Spring 2018.
