1. Where is Second located? What about accessibility, and parking?
Second Presbyterian Church is located on 55th Street between Brookside Blvd. and Oak Street, one mile south of the Plaza.  See the map for driving directions.

Parking lots are located on the west and north sides of the church.  Visitor reserved spaces are marked in the west side lot. Handicap parking is available in the north lot.  Parking is also available on 55th Street and other neighborhood streets.

The main entrance to the Sanctuary is located in the bell tower on the corner of 55th and Oak, with ramp access to the side (transept) door.

On the west side, an entry with steps provides access from the parking lot to the office, Chapel, and fellowship level of the church, as well as stairs and elevator to the Sanctuary.

On the south side, a ramp through the patio garden provides access to the church office, fellowship areas, Chapel, and elevator.

2. What are Second’s Worship Times?

Worship at 8:15
Worship at 8:15 a.m. takes place in the Chapel, which is located on the south side of the church. The service is about 45 minutes long, and incorporates the scriptures, hymns, and sermon of the day.  Prayer time often includes individual prayer requests. It’s friendly and casual. A printed bulletin provides the order of service.

Worship at 10:15
At 10:15 a.m. in the main Sanctuary, worship includes a children’s message, a choral anthem, and many of the traditional elements of Presbyterian worship, such as the Call to Worship, Prayer of Confession, Hymns, Affirmation of Faith, and Pastoral Prayer.

Our church observes the seasons of the church year:  Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost.  Changing banners reveal the colors and symbols of each season.

The stained glass windows and carvings of the Sanctuary tell the stories
of the Old and New Testaments, and symbolize the history of the faith and the journey of the church.

Hearing assistance receivers and large-print hymnals, Bibles and Order of Service bulletins are provided, as well as quiet pew activities for children are available from ushers.

From time to time, the 10:15 a.m. service includes the reception of new members, baptism, Moments for Mission, and other events related to our church family. It’s friendly, but somewhat formal in style.

3. What should I wear?
You’ll see people wearing whatever they feel comfortable in, from jeans to business casual to “Sunday-best.”

4. How are children welcomed?
Children are welcome at both worship services.  Childcare for nursery age children, with a pager provided for parents, is available for both services.  Following the children’s message in the 10:15 a.m. worship service, children between the ages of 4-7 are invited to attend Godly Play, a guided children’s story time in a special classroom. Worship ALIVE! is for children who are in 2nd-5th grade and is in Calvin Center on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays.

5. How does Second celebrate the Lord’s Supper?
The Lord’s Supper is celebrated at both worship services on the first Sunday of each month.  Elements of bread and juice are used, and all Christians are invited to participate.

6. What’s the music like?
Our church uses the Presbyterian Hymnal, which includes music from a diversity of traditions, including Native American, African, Hispanic, Korean, traditional European, and contemporary sources.

The choir presents music from many sources, including Gospel, African American, traditional and contemporary.  Our accompaniment is organ and piano, with frequent appearances of bell choir, percussion, and other instrumental additions.

7. Is there a coffee hour?
Following the 10:15 service, everyone is invited to enjoy coffee and conversation in the fellowship areas located at street level  (accessed by stairs/elevator or west/south entrances).  Sign-ups are provided for small group activities, which range from study groups to sightseeing excursions.

8. What about Sunday School?
Sunday school for all ages is at the 9 a.m. hour.  We seek to build a faith foundation for the littlest ones in age-appropriate ways.  Experienced teachers illustrate Bible stories with activities.  They encourage questions, listen, sing, and pray with the children.

Youth continue their faith journey with active participation in Scripture reading, listening to each other, praying together, and asking questions.  With respect for differing opinions within the group, leaders help foster individual spiritual growth.

Sunday morning adult learning opportunities include on-going classes that relate Bible teaching to the issues of daily life and current events in a discussion format.  The Witherspoon Class features an ever-changing roster of speakers on theological, cultural, and community topics, with time allowed for questions and discussion.  Special short-term classes are also offered from time to time.
