Back-to-School Reading & Listening

This week's recommendation is shared by Rev. Deb Meinke.

School is starting in less than a month - are you ready??? Parents and students have made their decisions about which school(s) to attend in the Kansas City Metro this year, but have you considered how we at Second can help students and families seeking more diverse, anti-racist educational settings? The Anti-Racism Group is quite interested in facilitating conversations about improving educational systems for all students, using an anti-racism lens. For those new to such conversations, I recommend Ibram X. Kendi's most recent book, How to Raise an Antiracist, designed to help parents and caregivers adopt anti-racist strategies for children at different developmental stages.

If you are inclined to approach educational systems from a broad historical perspective, I recommend the Code Switch podcast School Colors, a limited run-series about how race, class and power shape American cities and schools. Learn more here.

Episode 1 dropped May 4, 2022. Listen to it here.

Happy reading, listening, and discussing as we enter a new school year!
