Three to four times a month, Amethyst Place hosts a pop-up shop either outside and/or in the community’s shared space from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Families appreciate the opportunity to shop generously donated goods and enjoy snacks and bottled water. 

Second will help with the shop from 9 to 11:30 a.m./noon (or as long as anyone wants to stay). Volunteers will help put out items and assist with connecting with moms and their kids while they shop.

When volunteers arrive and sign in for their shift, they will sign and agree to the volunteer waiver.

Volunteers will be sorting, repackaging, labelling and stocking food and hygiene products.

The Giving Grove is a non-profit building tiny orchards across the nation to provide low-to-moderate income households with a free and nutritious source for fruit.

We will be tending the small orchard known as the Montgall Orchard to prepare it for winter. We will rake, weed, and put mulch around the trees. We will also do light pruning and plant some perennial seeds in the native beds.

Supplies needed: Garden gloves, trowels, shovels, rakes, etc.

We will try to find jobs that everyone can enjoy.

Park on the street, 35th Terr is ideal to park and then just walk up the hill to the site.

Second Members, Sarah and Adam Pope, founded the Giving Grove Montgall Orchard in 2017 to be a part of the neighborhood while creating a source of free, healthy food. The orchard is located in the Oak Park Northwest neighborhood, which is considered to be a food desert. A mix of pear, apple and cherry trees are growing in the space and anyone walking by is welcome to take what they would like. A group of nearby nuns harvest the cherries each year and use them in their mission to teach young people how to cook with them.

Donated food from wholesale partners arrives daily and volunteers sort it for distribution to low access neighborhoods in Kansas City. 

Volunteers will sort donated produce into four redirection tiers, ensuring that every piece of food finds its best possible use: fresh food access partners bringing fresh, affordable produce to undeserved areas; hunger relief partners providing fresh produce to over 60 local food pantries for neighbors in need; animal feed, supporting nonprofit rescue farms; and compost, for items not fit for human or animal consumption.

Parking instructions: Look for the Kanbe’s parking signs posted on Terrace Street.  Drive through the set of gates and park in a Visitor Parking spot along the south fence. Parking is limited, so we encourage carpooling.

Entering:  Please access our Volunteer Center through the double doors to the right of the loading bays with the large “Welcome Volunteers” sign.  When you arrive, please check in via the link emailed to you or the tablets in the Volunteer Center. 

Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting a little dirty is recommended and closed-toe shoes are required. You are welcome bring refillable water bottles and snacks.

Volunteers needed: around 30, children from 11 and up can help. Kanbe’s wants to be sure there are enough adults to keep an eye on children.

Kanbe’s needs people to register through their volunteer site to manage waivers and registration.

Volunteers will plant 25 small plants in the garden on 55th street, separate a few of the grasses and transplant them to fill out the backdrop of the garden.  Finally, we will be spreading a thin coat of mulch around garden for weed control and water retention.

Special requirements: Wear old comfortable clothing, shoes, socks, hat, yard gloves and bring water bottle. Wear sunscreen.

Polish pews using Pledge, clean up and restock pew racks with prayer cards and giving envelopes.

Pledge and rags will be provided. 

Volunteers needed: 5 or 6, children can participate

The tablecloths are in the closet next to the basement stairs across from the office.

Sew different colored ribbon in tablecloths to make the size easier to identify without unfolding the tablecloth.
