Gather

This week's recommendation is shared by Katie Stanley.

What foods come to mind when you think of American food? Maybe you think of apple pie or a ribeye steak. After watching “Gather”, you’ll likely have a completely different perspective. “Gather”, a documentary, explores a movement among Native Americans to reclaim their identities through food sovereignty, while battling trauma.

The film highlights the impacts of colonialism and how it has impacted Native youth. Because so many Native Americans were forced to assimilate and abandon their Native languages, land, families, and food, several generations of Native youth grew up with little to no knowledge of their Tribal culture. The individuals who share their stories with us in “Gather” tell us how they have worked through many forms of trauma and how reconnecting to Native food sources has been a pathway to healing.

You can stream “Gather” on Netflix.
